RUSU's Vegan & Organic Cafe

Realfoods

We are a not-for-profit social enterprise run by staff and student volunteers of RUSU.

Realfoods is a not-for-profit, social enterprise run by staff and student volunteers of the RMIT University Student Union (RUSU). We’re focused on sustainability and providing ethical, vegan, organic & healthy food options, plus fair trade, specialty coffee from Amelia Franklin Coffee Roasters.

Our flagship store is located at the bustling City Campus, with our second store located on the leafy green, Bundoora West Campus, where you can enjoy your coffee amongst the trees, whistling birds and the occasional cheeky kangaroo.
Our ethos is built around the idea that everyone can positively impact their environment with the smallest of changes and as both a business, and volunteer program, we are dedicated to educating students, staff and our customers on how this can be achieved. Some examples of how we do this are:

  • Sharing knowledge on sustainable, ethically farmed, locally sourced food options with mindfulness of where food comes from and what’s in it
  • Limiting waste and practising responsible waste management
  • Only using bio degradable and compostable packing, avoiding single use plastics. Encouraging the use of reusable packaging by offering discounts for BYO coffee cups.
  • Understanding the impact of mass produced animal and animal by-products on the environment and ways to limit their consumption
  • Making ethical/sustainable eating appeal to a broader audience, proving it can still be tasty, balanced and nutritious.
  • Collaborating with student groups on campus with shared objectives.

Our cafes provide real world training opportunities for our student volunteers, with an excess of 200 students volunteering with us across our two stores each year. So step inside our living classroom sometime…
Education, sustainability, community; for students, by students.

We have a seasonal rotating menu - come in and find out what's on offer.

Our food offerings are entirely vegan, ethical and as organic as possible. We do our best to source the freshest produce locally, while aiming to keep it as affordable as possible.
Our daily menu offers a range of regional curries, salads and grains, where you can ‘build your meal’ to your liking. We also have a selection of toasties, wraps, pies and a bunch of other sweet and savoury treats. We’re mindful that many of our customers have specific dietary requirements, we regularly offer FODMAP friendly dishes plus most of our menu is gluten free. We’re always happy to discuss any other specific requests you might have.

  • Each meal is lovingly prepared and our cooking is guided by the following principles:
  • Provide protein-rich meals: where even the biggest of carnivores will feel satisfied.
  • Provide complete proteins: ensuring you get all essential amino acids with each and every meal.
  • Provide adequate levels of iron in meals: containing iron rich foods with ingredients that assist in the absorbing of iron.
  • Ensuring complete deliciousness at all times: where food is not only wholesome but the taste is equally as vital, using ingredients that have no added preservatives or colours etc
  • Food as medicine: Lastly the intention with which it’s prepared is to provide nourishment not only to the body but also to support a healthy mind.
