RUSU's Sustainable Café

We are a social enterprise run by staff and student volunteers of RUSU. We focus on sustainability and providing ethical, plant-based & healthy food options and fair trade, specialty coffee. We specialise in catering to diverse dietary requirements including: gluten free, vegan, dairy free and halal friendly.

Our flagship store is located at the bustling City Campus, with our second store located on the leafy green, Bundoora West Campus, where you can enjoy your coffee amongst the trees, whistling birds and the occasional cheeky kangaroo.

Our Ethos

Realfoods is built around the idea that everyone can positively impact their environment and health & wellbeing with the smallest of changes. As business and volunteer program, we are dedicated to educating students, staff and our customers on how this can be achieved.

Some examples of how we do this are:

  • Sharing knowledge on sustainable, ethically, locally sourced food options with mindfulness of where food comes from and what’s in it.
  • Limiting waste and practising responsible waste management.
  • Only using bio degradable and compostable packing and avoiding single use plastics. Encouraging the use of reusable packaging eg. offering discounts for keepcups.
  • Making ethical/sustainable eating appeal to a broader audience, proving it can still be tasty, balanced and nutritious.
  • Collaborating with students and staff on campus with shared objectives.
  • Teaching life skills and promoting healthy eating.
  • Our cafes provide real world hospitality and retail training opportunities for our student volunteers.

Volunteer with Realfoods

Our volunteers are the backbone of what we do and if you’re looking for a new challenge, to pick up some life skills  and professional experience while making new friends, sign up to be Realfoods volunteer! You don’t need any experience, we’ll give you all the training you need. Shifts are available at both our City and Bundoora stores. We even have specific kitchen skills opportunities if you’re more interested in learning more about commercial food preparation.

Realfoods Catering

Sadly, due to the impacts and uncertainty around Covid, RUSU Realfoods is unable to provide catering during semester 2, 2021.
We hope to recommence catering in semester 1, 2021.
