Calling all RMIT students, volunteers, clubs, student mentors, advocates, sustainability champions, dedicated leaders and student life enthusiasts: We want to recognise YOU!

The 2020 RUSU Student Life Awards recognises your contributions, big and small, to student life outside the classroom, and highlight your outstanding commitment to participating in university life even whilst at home in iso. 

 

Scholarship prizes worth $1000, $750, $500 and $250 are up for grabs - what are you waiting for?!

Do you know a person who always springs to mind as soon as you hear the words ‘student life’? Someone who is always keen to get involved in whatever’s happening in the student community and who genuinely cares about their fellow students. Well, this award is for them. Without being on campus this semester, it's been hard going for student life initiatives, but the student life champion has still found a way to keep 'campus life' going whilst we're not on campus. RUSU wants to recognise a student who gives their all to student life on campus, and They’re passionate about a positive and inclusive campus environment, they bring boundless energy and enthusiasm to everything they do, and they’re a loyal, supportive and spirited member of the team. You’re not quite sure how they’ve managed to get involved in just about everything, but they do, and student life initiatives are where they’re in their element.

Core nominee requirements:

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Must not be a current or former Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

Do you know someone who has inspired and supported those around them to step up and get involved in student life on campus? Whether on campus pre-Covid, or faced with remote learning, They’ve got a ‘can-do’ attitude and are always prepared to take the initiative to make things happen. This award recognises an RMIT student who has provided outstanding leadership in student activities or organisations on campus, offering generosity, patience, mentorship and compassion towards their fellow students. They have a genuine passion for improving the student experience, an unwavering sense of responsibility and care for advancing the welfare of their fellow students.
 
Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student.
  • Must not be a current Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

Note: Contributions made to remote student life in the last 6 months will be prioritised but applicants who also demonstrate sustained contributions over the course of their studies at RMIT will be favourably considered.

Have you moved home overseas since the Covid-19 hit Australia and still managed to keep up with extra-curricular campus life? We think you're pretty amazing. This award recognises students who have maintained their commitments to extra-curricular activities whilst studying from home overseas during the pandemic. These commitments may have already been held prior to the pandemic, or new and creative ways that they've found to get involved from abroad.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Must not be a current or former Office Bearer for the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

Do you know someone who's been a COVID Community Champion this year? This award recognises a student who's given their time to community causes and provided help to those who need it during this time. They've acted altruistically and with a genuine concern for the welfare of their community during this time, and they're never one to look for recognition (but we think it's time that they deserve it!).

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Must not be a current Office Bearer for the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.
  • Self-nominations are not permitted.

This award recognises an RMIT student studying a higher degree by research (HDR) who has shown leadership amongst the RMIT HDR student community, working to uphold the best interests of their fellow HDR students when faced with the challenges of remote learning. 

The HDR Student Leader is collaborator, a keen listener and an advocate for their cohort. If you or someone you know has advocated for positive outcomes, or created inclusive and supportive spaces, online or face-to-face, for the HDR student community during this time, we want to hear from you! 

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Must not be a current Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

Note: Contributions made to remote student life in the last 6 months will be prioritised but applicants who also demonstrate sustained contributions over the course of their studies at RMIT will be favourably considered.

The Pathways Award recognises a student who has demonstrated incredible determination, patience, persistence and commitment to their study, but working their way up through different levels of qualifications at RMIT. A successful applicant would have progressed through three different ascending qualifications at RMIT. 

For example, through VCE, Vocational Education qualification, Associates Degree, Diploma, to a Higher Education Undergraduate qualification, Honours, Masters, HDR studies.

Eligibility Criteria:

Do you know a champion of peer support? Someone who’s always there to mentor other students with a goal, challenge or issue that they are facing? Someone who epitomises the qualities of patience and compassion? This award recognise an individual’s contribution to student mentoring or peer support.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student.
  • Must not be a current or former Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.
  • Submissions should demonstrate significant activity in the last 6 months, but may also draw on previous relevant activity.

Covid-19 has revealed the cracks and inequalities in our society that existed already, including those faced by womxn. RUSU wants to recognise a womxn who has created space to uplift and support her peers during this time.

She might be a role-model or mentor for other womxn, or have created safe spaces for womxn to participate or collaborate during these challenging and isolating times. She might have been a part of starting a new initiative or club, developed support networks for fellow women in her area or stood up for womxn's rights and safety during this time. Sound like a courageous womxn that you know? We want to know!

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student.
  • Must not be a current Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.
  • Must be a female-identifying student. The spelling of woman as 'womxn' is used to indicate that the nominee this.

One of the hard truths of the pandemic is that environmental issues have been pushed to the back burner whilst we deal with Covid. But these issues - the global climate crisis, crazy amounts of waste and plastic produced daily, ecosystem and habitat destruction, just to name a few - haven't gone away. This award recognises students who have kept up their efforts, or started new ones, to make a difference as an individual or in their community during this time. Open to individual students and clubs, we want to recognise those in our student community who have committed to making a difference, however big or small, to educate, advocate or act for safe climate and healthy planet during this challenging time. Because "from little things, big things grow...".

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Individual applicants must not be a current or former Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.
  • Applications on behalf of clubs must not be submitted by a current Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or an RMITV Office bearer.

Calling all media whizzes, this award will be granted to an RMIT student who has made valuable contributions to student media bodies or projects on campus, either pre-Covid, during Covid, or both. They may have worked to showcase or represent the RMIT student community through student media initiatives, enabled a wider section of the RMIT student community to actively engage with student media or been a valuable mentor for budding media pros.  Nominations should demonstrate significant activity, on campus, in the last 12 months, but may also draw on relevant activity occurring before that period and include some activities external to RMIT to support their application. 

Core nominee requirements:

  • Must be a current RMIT student. 
  • Must not be a current or former Office Bearer for the Union, employee of the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

Online communities have held us together during this time, but they only work when you've got people who are invested in making them supportive and positive spaces. Studying together and sticking together this year has been challenging, but then there are those who have been going above and beyond to create or participate in online communities that provide opportunity for genuine connection and support. Have you got a classmate who's set up an online study or support group? Or do you know someone who's always sharing resources and tips to help us get through this? Maybe they've taken the time to share their own experiences or skills online to help others. Online interaction isn't everything but it certainly helps during these times and we want to recognise those who are helping to make all of this screen time more bearable!

Where would iso uni-life be without clubs right at the heart of things? Student clubs have stepped up the to the plate with the challenges that this year has presented for students, and this award recognises their creativity and adaptbility amonst difficult circumstances. Has your club been keeping active with activities online and staying connected to members whilst apart? Have you been going above and beyond to look out for your members' health and safety during this time? This award is for you! We want to recognise the incredible dedication and creativity of student clubs during this period.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current Club, Society or Collective affiliated with RUSU or RMIT (Sports or Creative).
  • No member of the club may be a current Office Bearer for the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.

We're stronger, more creative and more resilient when we work together. This award recognises a club that has developed new connections and sought to build their club community despite, or in spite of the isolated nature of our lives this year. Working together and supporting each other is what will get us through this crazy year, so if your club has forged stronger connections with industry or in the community, or sought to collaborate with other like-minded clubs at RMIT (or beyond!), we want to recognise you.   • No member of the club committee/executive may be a current Office Bearer for the Union, Catalyst editor or RMITV Office bearer.
  • All members of the club executive/committee must be RMIT Students.

Do you have a club leader who is always there for your group? They continually strive for the best for the club, are passionate about the clubs cause and are committed to developing a positive and supportive culture within the club. 

They may have revitalised the club after a period of inactivity or helped the club through challenging times as we adjusted to an online campus environment, or they've helped to develop strong networks within RMIT or in the community. 

As a leader, they provide strong direction and inspiration for the group, but are also a keen collaborator, willing to negotiate and make compromises to support other club members. The successful nominee for this award strives to uphold all RUSU and/or RMIT policies and procedures, and always acts in the best interests of the University, their members and their student body.

This award recognises a club that ticks all the boxes of an outstanding student club: They have a committed team and strong relationships with their members, they look for opportunities to grow and develop their club's activities and membership, they're invested in serving their members and student community and they've adapted to iso-life and run a club event.
